CEO’s Letter
In late 1950, a group of investors began the work necessary to establish a new bank in Bacon County, Georgia. After approximately six months of planning, the application for a bank charter was granted on April 2, 1951. The Department of Banking approved authorization for the Citizens State Bank, Alma, Georgia, to begin the transaction of business on May 1, 1951.
The Directors, along with the shareholders decided to convert to a national bank. On January 2, 1974, approval was received and the Citizens State Bank was converted to The First National Bank of Alma. On January 1, 2001, The First National Bank of Alma went through another name change as result of market expansion and approval was given for The First National Bank of Alma name to be changed to FNB South.
In 1984, the shareholders of First National Bank decided to form a holding company. Applications were filed and on December 17, 1984, First Bank Shares of the South East, Inc. was approved as the holding company for First National Bank of Alma.
The bank operated in a small building until two adjacent building were purchased, and in 1990, reconstruction of three old buildings began. On July 5, 1993, our new building was completed.
Thanks to the hard work and support of our Shareholders, Directors, and Employees, FNB South has continued to grow over the years. In September 1995, FNB South purchased the First Georgia building and assets in Alma, Georgia.
On November 1, 1994, First Bank Shares of the South East, Inc. purchased three loan companies built a bank in Baxley, Appling County, Georgia. The bank in Appling County opened for business on December 1, 1997. On January 1, 2001 FNB South opened their second branch location in Douglas, Coffee County, Georgia.
First National Bank has received top ratings over the years like the Five-star rating from Bauer Financial Reports, Inc. Also, “Entrepreneur” magazine, July 1997 issue, listed FNB South as one of the nation’s top 100 micro-loan lenders.
